Asia's Club of the 1st Decade of the 21st Century (2001-2010)

 

          Contrary to the manner in which the top club of each continent was determined for the 20th century (1901-2000), national competitions were held in all countries over the entire first decade after the turn of the millennium. All these national club competitions are taken as much into consideration for the monthly Club World Rankings as are the club competitions held by the continental Confederations and by FIFA. In doing so, each individual result of these aforementioned competitions is considered from start to finish. Hence, for any given continent, chances are the same for each club during the first decade (2001-2010).

            The yearly points scored by clubs in the Club World Ranking are added from 2001 to 2010, yielding the continental club ranking. The first-placed club is that continent’s top club for the first decade. Adding the yearly points also gives a far more realistical picture of clubs that were particularly successful over one or more years than using reciprocal position of the rankings from the yearly Club World Ranking does. The top clubs can thus be determined the same way for each of the six football continents.

            Since as of 2006, the Football Federation Australia (FFA) is affiliated with the Asian Football Confederation (AFC), Australians clubs are henceforth also affiliated with the AFC. Hence, points earned by Australian clubs during the period of 2006-2010 will count only for the Asian club rankings of the first decade. Likewise, Israeli clubs only appear in the European rankings for the first decade of the 21st century, given that Israel – and hence its clubs – joined UEFA in 1994.

Al-Hilal FC Riyadh - Asia’s Club of the 1st Decade

            After nine of ten years, the Asian club ranking for the first decade of the 21st century are topped by FK Pakhtakor Tashkent (Uzbekistan), 12 resp. 21 points ahead of the Saudi clubs Al-Ittihad Club Jeddah and Al-Hilal Riyadh. The three are followed at some distance by the Japanese and South Korean top clubs FC Gamba Osaka, Seongnam Ilhwa Chunma FC, Kashima Antlers FC (Ibaraki) as well as FM Sepahan Isfahan (Iran), Al-Ain SCC (UAE), and Suwon Samsung Bluewings FC (Republic of Korea), all of which are 31 points within each other.

            Thanks to the early elimination of Pakhtakor FK Tashkent and Al-Ittihad Jeddah from the national Cups of their respective countries and from the AFC Champions League in 2010, Al-Hilal Riyadh advanced from third place to top the ranking. Because of the mentioned low point differences - there was in the last year of the 1st Decade additional changes of position among the "Top 10" and even extremely much in the total Asian club ranking. Among the "Top 10" are each two clubs from Saudi Arabia, Japan and the Republic of Korea.

            After Al-Hilal FC Riyadh is already Asia's Club of the Century (1901-2000), and Saudi club is now also Asia’s Club of the 1st Decade of the 21st Century. The "Top 100" of Asian club ranking for the 1st Decade (2001-2010) are composed of clubs from 25 countries. The countries with the most clubs among the "Top 100" are: Japan (11), Republic of Korea (9), Iran (9), China (8), UAE (6), Saudi Arabia (5), Qatar (5), Kuwait (5), India (5), Uzbekistan (4), Singapore (4) and Lebanon (4). During the period 2001-2010 237 clubs achieved more than 150 points.

Al-Hilal FC Riyadh will be honoured as Asia’s Club of the 1st Decade on occasion of the World Football Gala 2011 with a Certificate and a trophy.
